12/3 wiring diagram

ROMEX® 12/3 wire is used in buildings for circuits that use higher amperage than the standard 20 amps. Most people are not familiar with this type of wire because it is used to hook up heavy-draw appliances such as water heaters and central air conditioning.

What is the difference between 12 2 and 12 3 wiring?

The designation 12/2 indicates AWG 12 wire with two conductors (AC hot and AC neutral), 12/3 indicates AWG 12 wire with three conductors (two AC hot and AC neutral). Both designations also typically include a smaller bare copper earth ground conductor.

What does the 3 mean in 12 3 wire?

These are the gauge of the wire and number of conductors (wires) in the cord. So, a number like '12 3' means the cord has 12 gauge diameter wire and 3 wires.

How far can I run 12/3 wire?

You can run a 12 gauge wire up to 70 feet on a 15 amp circuit. That number drops to 50 feet if you run 12 gauge wire on a 20 amp circuit.

Does 12/3 wire have a ground?

12-3 NM (aka "Romex") cable will have a bare grounding wire, white neutral (grounded) wire, black hot (ungrounded) wire, and red hot (ungrounded) wire. If you only see white, black and bare wire then it is actually 12-2 (the second number is the number of conductors, the ground wire is not included in this).

How many wires does 12/3 have?

A: 12/2 is a black and white wire with a ground wire. 12/3 adds a third wire (red). This is typically used in 3 way+ circuits amongst other things.

What size wire do you need for 50 amp?

For a maximum of 50 amps, you'll need a wire gauge of 6. Fifty amp breakers are most often used to power many different appliances. However, a kitchen oven can alone require 50 amps.

How many outlets can I put on 12-2?

In total you can legally install 12 outlets on a circuit of 15 amp 120 volt. This includes light boxes as well as plugs so make sure you count them. You do not have to include smoke detectors in this count.

Can I use 12 gauge wire on a 20 amp circuit?

“Twelve-gauge wire is good for 20 amps, 10-gauge wire is good for 30 amps, 8-gauge is good for 40 amps, and 6-gauge is good for 55 amps,” and “The circuit breaker or fuse is always sized to protect the conductor [wire].”

What is the difference between 12 and 12 3 wire?

This is 12 3 wire and what makes it 12 3 is that you got three wires other than the ground.

Can I use 12 3 wire for a stove?

Not even remotely close. You need 8 gauge copper or 6 gauge aluminum wire.

Do I need 12/3 wire for a ceiling fan?

The main obstacle to installing an adjustable switch is the electrical run: Standard lighting or fans require 12-2 wire, and adjustable switches require 12-3 wire (14-gauge wire can also be used).

What wire size do I need to go 100 feet for a 60 amp service to a workshop?

The rule of thumb for voltage loss dictates that if the length of the 60 amp wire is 100 feet, we will see a 20% voltage drop. That means that 4 AWG wire will not suffice; we might have to use 3 AWG wire for a 60 amp breaker at a 100+ feet distance.

Why is 12 3 Romex so expensive?

Since the cost of the raw metal doubled, the cost to manufacture romex has increased and in turn the retail price is higher. Additionally the cost of labor has gone up, further increasing the cost to manufacture romex. Inflation is getting out of control.

How far can you run 12-gauge wire on a 10 amp circuit?

14 AWG100 feet
12 AWG120 feet
10 AWG128 feet
8 AWG152 feet
6 AWG188 feet

Which color wire in a 12-3 cable is the ground?

If the label says 12-3, this is a three-conductor (red, black, and white), 12-gauge cable with a bare copper ground wire included.

What size breaker do I need for 12-3 wire?

12/3 wire is only rated for 20 amps. You have to use 10/3 wire for 30 amps. Don't put over 80% of breaker size on the breaker. i.e. 20 amp breaker should only have 16 amps on it.

How many receptacles can be on a 20 amp circuit?

How many outlets can be put on a 20 amp circuit safely? A rule of thumb is to factor a maximum draw of 1.5 amps to each receptacle, which means you can put 10 outlets on a 20-amp circuit.

What is yellow Romex used for?

Yellow Wire The heavier, yellow ROMEX® is rated at 20 amps. Common applications for this 12-gauge wire are receptacles and three-way circuits. Larger appliances, such as a microwave or welder, require the additional power this wire delivers.

What is the best wiring for a house?

Since copper has high tensile strength, it can handle significant stress with minimal wear and tear. Needless to say, copper wiring is the first choice of most electrical experts and modern homeowners.
