subcooling refers to a liquid whose temperature is below its saturation point . As a general rule, all refrigeration systems have a subcooling stage, which can take place both inside and outside the heat exchangers.

Many reasons can cause subcooling to occur, including underfeeding, overcharging, restricted meter device, or faulty head pressure control. The effect of subcooling is reduced system efficiency and overcharging of the system.

Where is superheat in HVAC?

Measure the suction line temperature and suction pressure at the suction side service valve. Ensure the temperature probe is insulated from any external influences. Convert the gauge pressure to saturation temperature and subtract this temperature from the suction line temperature. This is the total superheat.

What is high subcooling?

High Subcooling is an indication that more than the designed amount of refrigerant is “backing up” or “packed” into the condenser. This can be caused by overcharge, restriction (such as a contaminated line drier or kinked liquid line), or an undersized or failing closed metering device.

For a well-working system, subcooling usually falls into a range of 6 and 10 degrees Fahrenheit. One of the most common sources of air conditioner inefficiency involves insufficient subcooling. This limits the amount of heat the refrigerant can absorb.

  1. Convert the evaporating pressure to temperature by using a pressure/temperature comparator.
  2. Subtract the temperature converted on the pressure/temperature Comparator from the actual temperature recorded at the TXV bulb.
  3. The difference is the actual evaporator superheat.

Dirty Evaporator Coil- A dirty air filter, evaporator coil or lack of air flow will cause superheat to measure low. Suction pressure will be low. Dirty Condenser Coil- A dirty condenser coil or lack of outdoor air flow will cause superheat to measure high. Suction pressure will be high.
